My self-titled EP from 2015 finally makes its way to streaming services
DJ Dark Flow EP
In the summer of 2015, I released my debut EP. Now, 8 years later, I finally put my self-titled EP on streaming services.
The reason it hadn’t come sooner was because I knew a couple of these original mixes were clipping and a bit muddy. Even after attempting to master them at the time, I was pretty novice to music production in a digital audio workspace, commonly referred to as a DAW. After getting the chance to clean up and correct a couple of these tracks, I am proud to finally be sharing them on streaming today.
The other reason I never released this EP was for the fact that my original mixes were already starting to audibly improve after just a few months of learning. My first release on streaming services became an instrumental dubstep remix of my good friend B. Dvine’s hip-hop single Freewill Refinement with Young Dirty Bastard, followed by my October two track single SO)L.
While my later releases began to improve in audio mixing, I still stand by my self-titled EP for its sheer ambition and dynamic range, both musically and thematically. This EP has themes both light and dark, combining sounds that are natural, familiar, and alien. I’d like to include a quick breakdown of each track:
1. Intro - For my first song ever, I couldn’t come up with a better name. It starts off with church bells, which actually bookend this EP in the song Seed. Early on you can hear the sounds of footsteps as if you were approaching church yourself. Whether the vibe is foreboding or spiritual, take your pick, because as soon as I take the song into the dark recesses of synthesized madness, my goal is to keep listeners guessing.
2. Meditate And Be Great - This was my first proper dubstep jam. Using again natural soundscapes like the ocean and hovering seagulls, I wanted the listener to fall into the groove and take the track title for what it is: reflect on who you are as a person and be the best that you can be in this life.
3. Speak With Your Eyes, Not Your Mouth - A love song through and through, dedicated to my now wife. The world is a place full of fake people with ill intentions. Sometimes you don’t have to listen to their words, you can just tell it from looking in their eyes. Most times kindness comes from a smile in the eyes. I tried to capture that on this cinematic and dynamic track that I sing on. I used to be shy about my voice, but I’m still working on building my confidence.
4. Ancient Origin - This is by far one of the strangest and most alien tracks I have ever come up with. I wanted to switch gears and pull off a vibe that is unnerving, of what must be out there in the universe so beyond our understanding. Ancient Origin was also a friend I made along the way. He helped me with producing the crazy jungle parts that I edited into the structure of my track. The aliens have always been here. Whether or not their origin is ancient is all relative at this point.
5. Seed - Originally the final track of this EP, Seed utilizes the sounds of a funeral organ to create a heavy and brooding atmosphere. Paired with my declaration “We plant seeds until we fall in the shadow of our dreams (death)”, I tried to make a big statement about legacy and how ideas live on after our ultimate demise. It ends with the church bells from before.
6. Seed VIP (feat. B. Dvine) - My final track is a VIP hip-hop remix with my friend B. Dvine, it being the only song I have ever rapped on. I drop references to my long-running radio show Adrift In The Airwaves and also my very first solo moniker in high school Satellite Beats, of which I have only 1 compilation album out on streaming which you can discover yourself if you want to chart me at an even earlier age. All songs were recorded when I was in high school on my multitrack recorder.
Anyways, I hope you get a chance to check this EP out. It means a lot to me, has a lot of heady themes, and charts the course for where I want to go artistically.
Peace out
DJ Dark Flow~
